Internship + Volunteer Opportunities

The German-American Heritage Foundation of the USA offers substantive internships to undergraduates, graduate students and recent graduates in our National Headquarters in Washington, DC. We are also looking for volunteers.

All our internship and volunteer programs are challenging and hands-on. They combine collective learning opportunities with practical workplace experience.  The program is comprised of hands-on practical learning activities including program development, Web site management, communication, planning and maintaining exhibits, organizing fundraising activities, guest services, as well as learning about the general workings of a non-profit.

With almost 18,000 members nationwide, the United German-American Committee is the only national German American umbrella organization with a presence in the nation's capitol.  The staff, interns, and volunteers carry out a number of activities which support our main objectives:

• Sharing a positive image of Americans of German-speaking heritage by focusing on their historical contributions to American society 

• Strengthening the ethnic awareness and cooperation of German Americans 

• Promoting the German language and culture 

• Cultivating German American friendship and cooperation 

• Supporting cooperative efforts among German Americans and their organizations

Under these program areas we have specific projects on event management and organization, Web development, research, and membership development.

Internship and Volunteer Duties include:

• Monitoring issues which impact German American culture in the United States

• Writing press releases, fact sheets, and/or briefing papers

• Creating story boards for The Ambassador newsletter

• Coordinating activities and events for German American Day

• Updating the United German-American Committee website

• Helping with membership development (mailings, some phone work, etc)

What we are looking for in candidates:

• Passion for learning and an interest in German American cultural heritage

• Knowledge of German American relations, German language, or journalism

• Excellent writing and oral communication skills

• General computer skills including Microsoft Office, some knowledge of HTML or FrontPage is a plus 

In addition to the many duties listed above, interns will learn much about the German American community in the United States as well as German American relations.
